FIRE SAFTETY PROCEDURES

Tenant Responsibilities
1. Each floor should have a primary and back-up Fire Warden and two searchers (one male, one female).
2. Those assigned as Fire Warden or back-ups must attend training sessions.
3. Tenants are responsible for providing an updated list of handicapped employees and their locations to the Tamarac Plaza Management Office.
4. Fire drills should be held semi-annually. The Tamarac Plaza Management Team will be glad to assist if requested.

Fire Wardens
1. Must be familiar with the layout of their suite, the details of the Tenant Fire Safety Plan, the location and operation of available alarm systems and fire protection equipment.
2. Must select two Searchers and supervise Searchers during an emergency.
3. Must evacuate occupants when a decision has been made to do so during an emergency.
4. Administrative Responsibilities:

  • a. Maintain a current list of handicapped employees and their locations;
  • b. Notify management of any changes in Emergency Organization personnel or handicapped list;
  • c. Brief new employees on emergency procedures and occupant responsibilities;
  • d. Know and be able to identify all employees;
  • e. Order relocation of employees if danger is present;
  • f. Notify 911 of location of handicapped during an emergency.

5. During an emergency, the Fire Warden is responsible for exercising leadership to provide for the safety of employees. The responsibility continues even after evacuation, until the emergency is terminated.

Emergency Procedures
1. When a fire is discovered and the alarm has not sounded, the Fire Warden or person finding the fire should:

  • close any doors to the fire area;
  • pull the nearest alarm;
  • call 911 from a safe area; and,
  • prepare occupants for relocation.
  • take the designated stairwell to the outside meeting area for your company.

2. If an alarm has sounded:
a. Proceed to the corridor/staging area by the nearest stairwell and form a line.
b. Fire Wardens are to wear a red ballcap so that they can be easily identified by other tenants or by the Fire Department. If possible, Fire Wardens should also keep a flashlight at their desks and carry it during relocation or evacuation.
c. When instructed by the Fire Department, Fire Wardens should relocate their groups as instructed.
d. Any area affected by fire or smoke is to be evacuated immediately.
e. Searchers should:

  • search all restrooms and other areas of their suite to ensure that all persons are aware of the alarm;
  • assist any persons who may faint or become disabled;
  • assist with the evacuation of any handicapped people;
  • keep in close communication with the Fire Warden in case other assistance becomes necessary;
  • close all doors leading into an area affected by fire or smoke after everyone is out.

f. Handicapped persons are to remain on the stairwell landing with their "buddy" until the Fire Department arrives. If danger is present, the handicapped should be relocated when possible, and 911 notified of their location.
g. Do not operate light switches or other electrical apparatus which may have been damaged by fire.
h. Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, etc.
i. To relocate or evacuate:
  • Use the stairs! Elevators are not safe in the event of a fire.
  • Take stairs downward, making certain to stay on the far right leaving room for firefighters to use the stairwell.
  • Do not run or talk in the stairwell as noise may hinder distribution of information or instructions.
  • Take the stairs at least three (3) floors down. At the first available re-entry floor, re-enter and call 911.

Handicapped
a. A list of all handicapped people should be supplied to the Building Management Office. This list should include:

  • the person's name;
  • the floor on which he/she works and the location on that floor;
  • the name of the Fire Warden responsible; and,
  • the nature of the handicap.

b. Each handicapped person should be assigned two "buddies" to assist and remain with the handicapped person until help arrives.
c. In the event of an emergency, the handicapped person should never be left alone! A "buddy" should always take the handicapped person to the nearest stairwell landing when there is smoke or fire, or if the Fire Department instructs everyone to evacuate the area.
d. Note: handicapped may include any of the following:

  • permanently physically handicapped;
  • temporarily physically handicapped;
  • mentally handicapped;
  • pregnant woman;
  • any other person who could not evacuate safely without assistance.

Once the Fire Department arrives, their authority overrides that of the Fire Warden and all of their instructions should be followed as quickly as possible.
